A Topeka man pleaded guilty on Monday to a Shawnee County carjacking that resulted in an unsuccessful police chase through Douglas County.
Yanez Carel Sanford, 18, pleaded guilty to one count of carjacking, one count of robbery and one count of discharging a firearm during a robbery, U.S. Atty. Jackie Williams said. Sanford admitted stealing a car July 20 at gunpoint from a Topeka couple who had stopped to help Sanford, after he was in a car accident in Shawnee County.
After the theft, Sanford led Shawnee County and Douglas County sheriff's deputies on a chase through the two counties, eluding authorities. He was caught Aug. 8 after he robbed a Coastal Mart convenience store in Wichita and shot the clerk in the leg.
Sanford faces up to 15 years in federal prison for the carjacking, up to 20 years for robbery and 10 years to life for discharging a gun during the robbery.
