Greek organizations sponsor speaker
Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and Delta Gamma sorority at Kansas University will present a benefit speech on leadership and ethics today.
Will Keim will discuss "The Education of Character" at 7 p.m. today at the Lied Center. Proceeds will benefit Children's Miracle Network at KU Medical Center.
According to his Web site, Keim has written five books on college life and character, lectured to more than 2 million students on 800 campuses worldwide and was selected as outstanding professor at Oregon State University for the 1985-86 academic year.
Tickets are $7 per person and are available at Student Union Activities, Murphy Hall and Lied Center box offices, or online at www.tickets.com.
Transformer work to close recreation center
The East Lawrence Center, 1245 E. 15th, will be closed Wednesday.
Electrical contractors will replace a building transformer, which will require the power be turned off during the daylong process.
Other recreation options for the day include free play from 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Community Building, 115 W. 11th; 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Holcom Park Recreation Center, 2700 W. 27th St.; or a visit from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. to Prairie Park Nature Center, 2730 Harper St.
The Boys and Girls Club, 1520 Haskell Ave., also will provide activities for children from 1:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The East Lawrence Center will return to normal hours Thursday.
Report leads to arrests for methamphetamine
Sheriff's authorities arrested two men on suspicion of making methamphetamine after waiting for the pair along a county road near Lecompton.
The two men each were booked early Sunday into the Douglas County Jail after they were spotted returning to an eastern Douglas County location where deputies were called on reports that meth was being manufactured, Douglas County Sheriff Rick Trapp said.
Sheriff's deputies responded to a Sunday morning call from a resident who said he had found suspicious items in a culvert along North 2190 Road, about one-half of a mile west of County Road 129.
Deputies believed the items were associated with making meth and decided to wait for someone to return to the items, Trapp said. A short time later, two men a 30-year-old from Tecumseh and a 36-year-old Topekan drove to the scene. Both were arrested.
The materials in the culvert were seized for analysis, Trapp said.
Juveniles in custody for vehicle break-ins
Two boys remained in custody on Monday, suspected in as 14 vehicle burglaries.
The juveniles, aged 14 and 15, were arrested early Saturday after a witness called police when she saw someone apparently breaking into vehicles in the 2700 block of Harper. Officers arrived and found numerous burglarized vehicles, Lawrence Police Sgt. Mike Pattrick said.
A search of the area turned up the two boys, and officers also found items that had been taken from the vehicles. The property which included compact discs and electronic equipment had apparently been abandoned in various locations in the area, Pattrick said.
Police continued Monday to return property to owners and determine how many vehicle burglaries had actually, Pattrick said.
Injury accident sends three to LMH
Three people suffered minor injuries in a three-car accident Monday evening at Sixth and Wisconsin streets, Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical said.
All three were taken by ambulance to Lawrence Memorial Hospital where they were treated and released, a hospital spokesperson said. The accident occurred about 5:30 p.m., Fire & Medical officials said.
Fire & Medical identified them as Richard Lewis and Jamie Smartt, both of Lawrence and Mark Granger of Louisiana.
No other details about the accident or the victims was available late Monday.
Senior Services board will meet today
The Douglas County Senior Services board of directors will have its general meeting at 3:30 p.m. today at the Douglas County Senior Center, 745 Vt.
The schedule for the monthly meetings, which are open to the public, has been changed. Meetings are now on the fourth Tuesday of every other month.
According to Senior Services, public comment concerning needs of the senior population in the community is encouraged.
Free nutrition class to be held Wednesday
A free health education class on nutrition is open to the public this week.
Stacey Hendrickson, a registered dietitian, is conducting the class at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Health Care Access, 1920 Moodie Road.
The class is being offered through the community health program at Kansas University and Health Care Access. The clinic is functioning as a satellite location for other health education programs, including the Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department, Lawrence Memorial Hospital and the Douglas County Extension Office.

Crime Stoppers fugitive nabbed
A man featured as a Crime Stoppers fugitive was caught after a witness reported seeing him, Lawrence Police said Monday.
Rex Pinegar, 30, was spotted Friday afternoon in a business in the 3400 block of Iowa Street. He had been sought since February for failing to comply with his parole after being released in July on vehicle burglary convictions, according to Lawrence Police.
He was arrested without incident, police said.
Pinegar was featured last week along with Sandy S. Falk, 38, who is sought on an outstanding felony probation violation. She was assigned to Douglas County Court Services in March 2000 but hasn't reported since June.
Falk was convicted of her third charge of driving under the influence in 1996. She weighs 165 pounds and is 5 feet 6 inches tall. She has brown hair and blue eyes.
Anyone with information about her whereabouts is asked to call 843-8477. Callers can remain anonymous. Crime Stoppers will pay a $100 reward for information leading to their arrests. Crime Stoppers doesn't record tips and doesn't subscribe to Caller ID.
Volunteers recruited for horseback program
Therapeutic Horseback Riding Instruction of Lawrence (THRIL) is seeking individuals to volunteer for the program.
THRIL is a nonprofit, volunteer-driven organization committed to providing high-quality, equine-oriented activities for children and adults with disabilities.
A volunteer training will begin at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds. No experience with horses or people with disabilities is necessary.
Paraeducators with the Lawrence school district may receive up to two in-service hours for this training.
