Skiing dates set for Lone Star Lake

Douglas County commissioners Monday approved water skiing dates for Lone Star Lake.

Dates and times are: 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays May 28 through July 21 and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on the same days July 24 to Sept. 3. The final skiing dates and times will be 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sept. 8, 16 and 22.

Jet skis are not allowed on the county-owned lake.

KDOT to reimburse for road damage

For the first time, the Kansas Department of Transportation will reimburse counties for damage done to local roads between quarry sites and state highways.

Commissioners Monday approved an agreement with KDOT, which requires the contractor to repair damage done to roads used to haul material from the asphalt plant to the project site. If any quarried material is hauled over local roads, KDOT would make annual payments to the county.

Dredging permit extension approved

A sand dredging company was granted a nine-month extension on a conditional use permit.

Kaw Sand Co. Sand Dredging, just east of Lawrence near North 1500 and East 1800 roads, has operated since 1991.

Commissioners approved a five-year permit in 1996 and on Monday, they granted an extension so the permit will coincide with the review of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which is expected to act on the permit in December.
