- Never give anyone your Social Security number over the phone or unsolicited. Notify your banker or law enforcement official of suspicious phone inquiries.
- Guard your ATM cards and identification numbers and receipts. Notify your bank as soon as possible if your card is stolen.
- Tear up or shred financial documents before throwing them away.
- Don't mail bills from your mailbox. Take them to a post office.
- Store new and canceled checks in a secure area. Burglars know the most common areas people store checks, so choose somewhere out of the ordinary.
- Do not have your Social Security or driver's license number printed on the checks. Combined with other information on the check, they could give a thief enough information to apply for a loan, credit card or phony bank account in your name.
- Use dark ink, and never light colors or pencil that can easily be erased or covered.
