Gasoline prices dip a penny

Gasoline prices dipped a penny a gallon at the pump in the past two weeks, continuing a trend that began in January, an industry analyst said Sunday.

The average price of gasoline was about $1.47 a gallon, down one cent from March 9, according to the Lundberg Survey of 8,000 stations nationwide.

Prices have fallen more than 5 cents per gallon since Jan. 15 as the winter season reduced driving and gasoline demand.

Demand is expected to rise starting next month, as the nation enters the peak summer driving season, analyst Trilby Lundberg said in Camarillo.

Motorcycling fatalities rise

After nearly a decadelong decline, motorcycle fatalities are on the rise again and statistics show that aging baby boomers may be behind the increase.

Motorcycle fatalities among riders 35 and older rose 59 percent between 1994 and 1999, while federal statistics show that deaths for those 34 and younger fell 22 percent during the same period, the Los Angeles Times reported Sunday.

Motorcyclists accounted for 2,472 of the 41,611 people killed on America's roads in 1999 about 6 percent of the total. During the past 10 years, the average age of motorcyclists killed rose from 29.3 in 1990 to 36.5 in 1999, according to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration statistics.

No one knows exactly why older cyclists are dying on the road in greater numbers, although inexperience, overconfidence, and alcohol consumption may all play a part. So can the tendency among older riders to embark on all-day road trips, which exposes them to the hazards of the highway for longer periods.

Pilots go on strike

Comair pilots went out on strike early today after talks for a new contract with the regional airline broke off.

The airline, which also flies under the name Delta Connection, canceled most of its flights scheduled for today in preparation for the strike.

Comair spokeswoman Meghan Glynn said negotiators in Hebron were told by union leaders Sunday that they were unable to compromise on the major issues.

The cancelation involves flights scheduled from 6 a.m. through 6 p.m. today about 750 of the airline's 815 daily departures in a system that serves about 25,000 passengers daily.

Comair said it was trying to provide customers with alternative transportation on its parent, Delta Air Lines, or other airlines.
