Schaumburg, Ill. Motorola Inc. said Friday it was cutting 4,000 more jobs, or about 3.1 percent of its work force, to bring to 22,000 the number of job cuts announced since December.
The latest cuts are in Motorola's networks sector, which was created in January to provide broadband and wireless communications products.
"Motorola is making tough but deliberate and strategic business decisions in order to remain competitive in the slowing economy," said Edward Breen, president of Motorola's Networks Sector, in a statement.
"Unfortunately, reductions have been necessary for us to improve financial performance, and this is something that we will have to continually evaluate as we monitor market and economic conditions."
Motorola's stock price got a boost Friday from the latest news, rising 31 cents to close at $15.99 on the New York Stock Exchange.
