Gardner Services for John Michael "Stick" Downing, 58, Gardner, will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Bruce Funeral Home, Gardner. Burial will be in Gardner Cemetery.

Mr. Downing died Friday, March 23, 2001, at his home.

He was born Aug. 8, 1942, in Merriam, the son of Milton M. and Mary Louise (Kelly) Downing.

He graduated from Basehor High School and moved to Gardner in the late 1970s. He also had lived in Bonner Springs.

Mr. Downing served in the U.S. Army from May 1968 to August 1969. He had been a Chinook helicopter mechanic and engineer at New Century Air Center, and also had worked for his father's Automotive Battery Service, Kansas City, Kan. He retired in 1993.

He retired from the Army Reserve National Guard in November 1988, and was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Gardner.

He married Melissa "Diane" Inscore on Feb. 14, 1980, in Miami, Okla. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include his mother, Mary Louise Downing, Lansing; two sons, Steve Staley, Baldwin, and Mike Staley, Olathe; two sisters, Joanne Aaron, Leavenworth, and Loretta Kirchhofer, Wakarusa; a brother Bernard Downing, Wichita; and two grandchildren.

Friends may call from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, where Masonic Lodge services will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Sunday.

The family suggests memorials to Kansas City Hospice, sent in care of the funeral home, P.O. Box 192, Gardner 66030.
