KU senior wins Truman Scholarship

A Kansas University senior has won a national Truman Scholarship worth about $30,000 for graduate study.

Karrigan Bork, Lawrence, is the 14th KU student to get the Truman Scholarship, designated for students planning public service careers, according to the KU Office of University Relations.

Bork, the son of John Bork and Jean Shepherd of Lawrence, is seeking bachelor of science degrees in biodiversity, ecology and evolutionary biology and bachelor of arts degrees in chemistry and environmental studies. He will graduate in May 2002 and plans to enroll in a law program specializing in environmental and natural resources.

In competing for the scholarship, Bork wrote a policy proposal asking President George W. Bush to remove four dams on the lower Snake River to save the salmon, which have been declining in numbers.
