Services for Mary Ellen Stansifer, 67, Lawrence, will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. Private inurnment will be in Pioneer Cemetery.

Mrs. Stansifer died Wednesday, March 21, 2001, at her home.

She was born June 23, 1933, in Wichita, the daughter of Clarence M. and Mary Katharine (Briscoe) Love. She graduated from Wichita High School East and earned a bachelor's degree in history and Spanish from Wichita State University. She lived in New Orleans from 1954 to 1959, Lafayette, La., from 1959 to 1963, and moved to Lawrence in 1963. She also had lived in Chile and Costa Rica.

Mrs. Stansifer had worked as an elementary teacher of Spanish in Lawrence schools and as a secretary at Kansas University Applied English Center.

She also worked for more than 20 years with Meals on Wheels and with Douglas County Historical Museum.

She was a member of Kaw Valley Quilters Guild, Crazy Quilters, Audubon Society and Germanna Colonies genealogical society.

She had also organized the first nationwide Stansifer reunion, and published an autobiography and genealogy of the Briscoe family and was the principal author of The Stansifer Genealogy.

Mrs. Stansifer was also a member of University Women's Club, League of Women Voters, Spanish Play Reading Group, Kansas Land Trust and Westerners.

She married Charles L. Stansifer in 1954. He survives.

Other survivors include two daughters, Mary Lee Stansifer Collins and Karen Gwen Stansifer Sabot, both of Denver; two sons, Ryan Dale Stansifer, Melbourne Beach, Fla., and John Addison Stansifer, Lawrence; and five grandchildren.

Friends may call from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home, where the family will greet them from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday.

The family suggests memorials to Meals on Wheels or Douglas County Historical Society, sent in care of the funeral home.
