No Powerball jackpot winner
None of the tickets sold for the Powerball game Wednesday night matched all six numbers drawn in Des Moines. Players matching all five numbers and the Powerball would have won or shared the $34.7 million jackpot. The prize goes to an estimated $40 million for Saturday.
Tickets that match the first five numbers, but miss the Powerball, win $100,000 each, and there were nine of those. Two of those tickets were sold in New Mexico, and one each in Connecticut, Delaware, Kansas, Kentucky, Missouri, Oregon and Wisconsin.

Parents plead guilty to gun safety violation
The father of a kindergartner who found a loaded handgun in a dresser drawer and took it to school pleaded guilty to a felony charge of child neglect. Calvin and Shawnee Sistrunk both admitted in court Wednesday they shouldn't have left the gun where their 6-year-old daughter could reach it.
"It was an innocent mistake, something that should never have happened," said Calvin Sistrunk, 30. Shawnae Sistrunk, 29, avoided prosecution under a diversion agreement.
Their daughter found the .22-caliber, semiautomatic handgun in the drawer March 1, authorities said. They said the gun had one round ready to fire and its safety was off when school officials confiscated it. The 6-year-old was suspended.

Suspect convicted in teen's rape, murder
A Bentonville jury convicted a man of first-degree murder Thursday in the death of a 13-year-old boy, sparing the man from the death penalty by rejecting a more serious capital murder count. Joshua Macabe Brown, 23, faces up to life in prison for the death of Jesse Dirkhising. The jurors had voted Wednesday to convict Brown on a rape charge, which also can carry a life sentence.
Jesse was allegedly drugged, bound, raped and sodomized in 1999 at the apartment Brown shared with his gay lover, Davis Don Carpenter, 39. Prosecutors said the boy suffocated because of the drugs and the way he was trussed up and strapped down to Brown's bed.
