Douglas County Sheriff's authorities on Thursday released the name of an accident victim who died Wednesday afternoon in West Lawrence.
John Allan Harrington, 56, died after he apparently lost control of his vehicle, a Volkswagen Golf, and swerved into oncoming traffic on Kansas Highway 10, Douglas County Sheriff Rick Trapp said Thursday. Harrington had been driving east on K-10 when he swerved to the left, colliding with a westbound Buick LeSabre driven by Donna Saile, 61, of Baldwin.
Harrington, from Kansas City, Mo., was pronounced dead at the scene. Saile and her grandson, Jake Saile, 11, of Lecompton, were taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital, where Donna Saile was listed in good condition Thursday.
Jake Saile later was flown to Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Mo., where he was in fair condition.
All three victims in the crash were wearing their seat belts, Trapp said. The accident remained under investigation. A cause hadn't been determined Thursday, Trapp said.
Shortly after the accident, another accident occurred west of the fatal crash. An eastbound driver collided with a Douglas County sheriff deputy's vehicle that was parked across the highway to stop traffic. The deputy tried to flag the driver off but had to jump out of the way before the driver collided with the patrol car, Trapp said. No injuries were reported.
