A Perry man was seriously injured when he apparently lost control of his vehicle early Wednesday and crashed into an embankment southeast of Lawrence.

Kelly R. Potter, 32, was listed in critical condition at the intensive care unit at Kansas University Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan. He was taken to the hospital from the scene of the accident by LifeStar helicopter.

The accident occurred about 12:35 a.m. Wednesday as Potter was driving his 1995 Chevrolet Silverado 4-by-4 pickup truck southbound on County Road 1055. His truck hit several objects, including a newspaper rack, and left the roadway, coming to rest near a home at 1127 E. 1500 Road, Douglas County Sheriff's Lt. Kathy Tate said.

Potter was the only occupant of the vehicle. Reports said that he may have been trapped in the truck for a short time, but Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical officials did not have to extricate him, officials said.

It was unclear whether Potter had been wearing a seat belt. Factors that may have caused the accident also weren't known; the crash remains under investigation, Tate said.

Seconds after Potter's crash, a second vehicle hit debris left by Potter's vehicle. Chad R. Wissler, 18, of Douglas County, hit a tire rim from Potter's truck, but Wissler was wearing a seat belt and wasn't injured, Tate said.
