Arson determined to be stolen vehicle

A vehicle that had been stolen from Topeka was found burned in Lawrence, authorities said Wednesday.

The silver 1985 Toyota Camry was found shortly after midnight Tuesday near the intersection of Fourth and Wisconsin streets after police responded to a call of a vehicle fire. Officers arrived to find the passenger compartment fully engulfed in flames and fire coming from the engine, Lawrence Police Sgt. Mike Pattrick said.

The fire was determined to be arson, Pattrick said. No suspects had been identified Wednesday, but Pattrick said it appeared that some sort of accelerant had been used in the fire.

Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical crews extinguished the fire. Authorities later learned that the vehicle had been stolen on March 14 from a Topeka woman and had been parked near the intersection for a few days, Pattrick said.

The vehicle had been valued at $1,000.

Overland Park Prosecutors have filed charges against an Overland Park woman and her boyfriend in the scalding of her 2-year-old daughter.

Kimberly L. Gibson, 20, and Joseph Czechan, 22, were arrested Tuesday and appeared in Johnson County District Court. Czechan allegedly soaked a hand puppet in scalding water in February and held it to the toddler's forehead. The girl was burned on her forehead and her hands. Authorities believe her hands were injured while trying to fend off the assault.

Alternative charges were filed against Czechan of either child abuse or aggravated battery. Alternative charges allow prosecutors to ask a judge or jury which legal definition best fits the case.

Gibson was charged with child abuse for allegedly allowing her injured daughter to go without medical treatment for two days. A relative took the girl to the hospital for treatment.
