One man is dead and a woman and child were injured Wednesday when two cars collided on the Kansas Highway 10 bypass about a mile west of Wakarusa Drive.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Department released few details about the accident late Wednesday, saying it is still under investigation.

One person was killed and two others were injured in a two-vehicle
accident on Kansas Highway 10 about a mile west of Wakarusa Drive.

One person was killed and two others were injured in a two-vehicle accident on Kansas Highway 10 about a mile west of Wakarusa Drive.

Names of all of the victims also were withheld by the sheriff's department pending notification of all necessary relatives, Sheriff's Lt. Kathy Tate said. Nor would the department specify the gender or ages of the victims or which vehicles they were traveling in.

A woman who assisted victims at the scene of the accident said the fatality victim was a man.

The woman and child victims, however, were identified by Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical officials as Donna Saile and Jake Saile, both of Lecompton. They were transported by ambulance to Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

Jake Saile was then taken by Life Flight air ambulance to Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Mo. A hospital nursing supervisor said he was in fair condition late Wednesday.

Donna Saile was in satisfactory condition at LMH, a nursing supervisor said.

The relationship between Donna Saile and Jake Saile was not clear late Wednesday.

The sheriff's department would say only that the accident occurred about 4:30 p.m and that one adult died at the scene and another adult and child passenger were injured.

One car was eastbound and crossed the center line into the path of the westbound car, Tate said.

At the scene, the fatality victim's car was covered with a blue tarp and appeared to have been going eastbound.

Before law enforcement and rescue units arrived, several persons either stopped their vehicles or ran over to assist the victims from the nearby Sport 2 Sport complex and Dance City Performing Arts Academy along nearby Clinton Parkway.

One of them was Lori Tochtrop, 26, owner of Dance City. She went to the boy's aid.

"He was walking around and I don't think anybody realized how seriously hurt he was," Tochtrop said. "I just tried to help. I tried to keep him calm."

The boy started complaining of injuries to his stomach area, Tochtrop said. She then saw he had some contusions on his midsection.

"He was very much wanting to go to sleep," Tochtrop said of the boy. "I kept talking to him and asking him about things."

One of the things Tochtrop learned about the boy was that his birthday is on Monday, she said.

This is the fifth fatality accident in Douglas County since the first of the year. Three of them have occurred on county roadways and two in the city limits of Lawrence.
