Students go day-camping in parks for spring break
More than 100 young students are doing fun activities through the Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department's spring break camp.
Marty Birrell (above), director of the Prairie Park Nature Center tells participants in the spring break camp about the center's owl.
This week, the seven-year-old program has 114 participants from ages 5 to 12 who are going on field trips, playing games and participating in activities.
The students take part in the program from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. through Friday at Holcomb Park Rec Center, East Lawrence Center or the South Park Rec Center. Kansas University students are helping supervise the children.
Wednesday, a group visited the Prairie Park Nature Center, 2730 Harper St., and learned about wildlife such as the great horned owl and a turkey vulture, which are kept in cages at the center.
Today and Friday, students will go to a Lawrence fire station and Lawrence's public golf course near Clinton Lake and swim at the Carl Knox Natatorium.
"The activities keep them pretty occupied, and it's fun for the kids, and that's what it's all about," said Duane Peterson, the department's special events supervisor.
