Royals trip Toronto

Kansas City pitcher Blake Stein, above, pitched 22/3 scoreless innings during the Royals' 7-4 spring training victory over Toronto on Tuesday in Haines City, Fla. Story on page 9C.

Rosado to open season on DL

Haines City, Fla. Kansas City Royals pitcher Jose Rosado will begin the season on the disabled list with an injured left shoulder. Rosado, a two-time All-Star, had surgery last June 23 and has not pitched since April 30.

Rosado threw only 14 pitches in a simulated game Monday and walked off the mound with discomfort in his biceps.

"I'm disappointed for (Rosado)," Royals manager Tony Muser said Tuesday. "He's worked his tail off. He's frustrated. I told him to be disappointed, but not frustrated."

With Rosado definitely out, Muser said candidates for the fifth slot in the rotation are Mac Suzuki, who had an operation on his shoulder in October, Chad Durbin and Kris Wilson.

Suzuki has been impressive in two spring outings, allowing one hit and no runs in five innings while his velocity has reached as high as 93 mph.

"We've got to get him up to 85-90 pitches," Muser said. "We've got time to get him there. He's a candidate as much as he's progressed."

Henson headed to Yankees?

Tampa, Fla. Drew Henson appears headed back to the Yankees, a move that could lead him to choose baseball over the NFL. Cincinnati tentatively agreed Tuesday to trade the third baseman to New York along with outfielder Michael Coleman in exchange for outfielder Wily Mo Pena.

For the deal to be completed, all three players must pass physicals. Henson, a star quarterback, began spring football practice at Michigan last weekend.
