KCC extends shutoff ban
The Kansas Corporation Commission has issued an emergency order extending the "cold weather rule" and implementing a moratorium on service disconnections for natural gas and electric services.
The moratorium will run through May 31.
The order provides emergency relief for customers struggling to pay their high utility bills caused by record-breaking natural gas prices over the winter. Utilities also must continue to offer cold weather rule payment arrangements to residential customers who are unable to pay their bills in full or have amounts due from past bills.
The customer must make an initial payment of 1/12th the total amount owed the utility. The balance will be billed in equal payments over the next 11 months in addition to the regular monthly bill. Utility companies may also require customers to go on a level payment plan for the same period.
bomb scare
Appraiser's office threatened
Sheriff's authorities have interviewed but not arrested a man who is accused of threatening to blow up the Douglas County appraiser's office, Sheriff Rick Trapp said Tuesday.
The 70-year-old suspect was at the tax appraiser's office, located in the Douglas County Courthouse, and made the threat as he was leaving. He apparently was upset about his property valuation, Trapp said.
The incident occurred about 1:30 p.m. on March 13 and was reported the next day. Trapp released the information on Tuesday.
Sheriff's deputies searched the building after the threat but found no explosives. Extra security was provided for about two days after the threat was made, Trapp said.
Reports on the threat will be forwarded to the Douglas County district attorney's office, Trapp said.
