KU doctoral student to study water insects with grant

A Kansas University doctoral student has received a research grant to fund the study of waves made by water striders, insects that move and communicate using the water's surface.

Jason Botz, Lawrence, who is studying ecology and evolutionary biology, received the grant from Sigma Xi, a scientific research society.

Botz and his supervisor, Catherine Loudon, a KU assistant professor in ecology and evolutionary biology, will use laser lines to measure the complete three-dimensional topography of waves made by water striders as they move across the surface of milk.

Botz and Loudon hope to use their results to develop a means to predict the rate of dissipation of waves. They plan to study how the rate of a wave's dissipation may affect communication between insects.

Queers and Allies announces new Web site

www.ku.edu/~qanda

A new Kansas University Queers and Allies Web site aims to provide a comprehensive online resource for both the curious and well-informed.

The site offers a range of information about the 32-year-old campus group and other lesbian, bisexual, gay and transsexual issues of concern to university students.

According to Jeremy Wolff, speaker's bureau coordinator, Q&A had fallen behind other queer organizations in the Big 12 Conference and a revamp was necessary.

Wolff and Sean Ringey, publicity coordinator, say the site will regularly be updated and will include a poll on the front page to allow visitors to vote instantly on controversial topics.
