To the editor:
We read in the paper and hear on TV about all the crimes committed in Lawrence as well as around our country.
I would like to take a few minutes to tell you about GOOD DEEDS.
1. There are two young boys that live on my street. When the first snow fell I was surprised to find my driveway and sidewalk completely cleared. Patrick and Stephen Griffith would not take any payment for this deed. With every snowfall this season my drive and walk have been cleared of ice and snow. I have not seen them do this every time but they consider it befriending a neighbor.
Their parents are to be complimented for the values they are instilling in these two fine young men. Patrick and Stephen, we thank you and are proud of you.
2. The Betty Washington Chapter of D.A.R. sponsored two girls for Girls State. Lydia Windheuser and Elizabeth Stephens of Lawrence High were the recipients. Recently, they accepted my invitation to speak to our chapter and I must tell you that every organization in Lawrence should ask these two young ladies to speak.
They were well prepared and gave a fine presentation and we learned so much about these two young ladies. After speaking to our group they were off to LINK to help serve. They have other volunteer programs they are involved with and are active in many school activities. They have college careers planned and we are so thankful that we have young ladies like Lydia and Elizabeth that will be shaping our future.
They wrote thank you notes, were delighted to be able to speak to our group and took time to answer questions about Girls State.
Lawrence can certainly be proud of boys like Patrick and Stephen and girls like Lydia and Elizabeth. Many thanks.
Annie Merriam,
Lawrence
