Dredging begins at Lone Star Lake
The process of clearing years of accumulated silt and debris from the bottom of Lone Star Lake has begun.
Keith Browning, the county's director of Public Works, said the contractor, Dredge America of Kansas City, Mo., started dredging late last week.
He said the idea is to dredge deeper along the outside portions of the cove and dredge less in other areas so that the dredged quantity is approximately the same as originally planned.
Browning said the dredging work will be done as long as the water levels are appropriate and should be completed in June, weather permitting. The reconstruction of the lake's spillway also should be finished about the same time.

26-year-old arrested in disturbance at Taco Bell
A Lawrence man was arrested after he allegedly hit a police officer with the officer's flashlight after reports that the man was causing a disturbance at a fast-food restaurant.
The 26-year-old man was booked in Douglas County Jail in connection with battery against a police officer and disorderly conduct after the incident, reported shortly after 2 a.m. Sunday at Taco Bell, 1408 W. 23rd St., police said.
Officers responded to the scene on reports of a man being drunk and disorderly. The restaurant manager told police the suspect had been walking through the drive-through area, banging on vehicle windows and the drive-up window, police said.
The manager gave the suspect a taco, in hopes he would leave, but the suspect threw the taco at the drive-through window, police said.
The officer grabbed the suspect, who then took the officer's flashlight and swung it, hitting the officer in the shoulder. The officer wasn't injured, police said.
The suspect was released Monday after posting a $500 bond.
