Museum adds sneakers to collection

Nike's new Air Max Craze and Air Visi Havoc cross-trainers are a mix of fashion and function. The sneakers feature a slingback heel strap along with other traditional athletic-shoe components like full-length cushioning and rubber outsoles.

The shoes are made to wear without socks so the lining is seamless.

The Air Max Craze ($95) is available in three color combinations, including black-citrus and white-gray-yellow. The Air Visi Havoc has eight looks, including blue-red and gray-black-yellow.

The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art has added a pair of the Air Visi Havoc's to its permanent collection.

You can buy before you go

You can take it with you at least if you're a guest at a W hotel.

The hotel chain offers a catalog filled with the items that help make guest rooms more comfortable, including the nickel-plated brass ice buckets ($30), embroidered-logo bathrobes ($125), feather and down pillows ($35-$70), mattresses and box springs ($700-$900).

Also offered in the catalog is a line of W-logo shirts, jackets, bags and travel accessories, like binoculars.

To order a catalog, call (800) 779-6050, or visit the Web site, www.whotels-hotelsathome.com/

Book tells you how to do just about everything

Do you want to become a lifeguard or a private eye but not know how to go about it? Perhaps you need to know how to make a bed, or treat athlete's foot, or get your name off a mailing list. Or take care of a turtle.

These are among the how-to topics covered in a new book, "How To Do Just About Everything."

The book contains almost 700 pages of step-by-step instructions for 1,001 projects, along with tips, warnings and material lists. The information is compiled by an editorial team headed by Courtney Rosen, founder of the Web site www.ehow.com.

There are 15 fields of how-tos, including education (how to find out your IQ); electronics (how to improve radio reception); home maintenance (how to unclog a toilet); food (how to use chopsticks); personal finance (how to get rich); and relationships (how to know when it's over).

The hardcover is published by Simon & Schuster at $25.
