— Memorial services for Merle "Gene" Smith, Topeka, will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Parker-Price Mortuary, Topeka.

Mr. Smith died Saturday, March 17, 2001 at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Topeka.

He was born May 7, 1928, in Topeka and was a lifelong resident.

Mr. Smith was a U.S. Army, serving from 1948 to 1952. He was an inspector for 22 years for Western Weighing Inspection Bureau, retiring in 1990.

He married Verda M. Whitebread on Oct. 9, 1950, in Topeka. She died June 23, 2000.

Survivors include two sons, Ernie G. and Robert E., both of Topeka; four daughters, Devona K. Peralta, Topeka, Laura J. Harris, Siloam Springs, Ark.; Sharla S. Dorland, Carbondale, and Michele D. Morstorf, Meriden; a brother, Jim, Kingsville, Mo.; a sister, Lois Long, Topeka; 15 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
