Samantha Kechum, DeSoto, is a winner in the 2001 Agriculture Art Contest.
Samantha, a fifth-grader at Woodsonia Elementary School in Johnson County, received a $50 savings bond and will be recognized at an awards program March 20 in Topeka.
The contest is sponsored by the Kansas Foundation for Agriculture in the Classroom. The event was a bumper sticker art contest for Kansas school children in grades kindergarten through 6.
The contest had more than 4,000 entries statewide. Each entry was judged for creativity, originality, use of space, color and relevance to the theme.
Students representing three Lawrence junior high schools competed March 10 at Washburn University's College Music Educator's 29th Annual Junior High/Middle School Solo Festival.
About 600 students from 37 schools competed in the contest.

Amy Coles, Lawrence, and Heidi Meinen, Baldwin, graduated from Wichita State University in December 2000.
Jeff Bregman, Free State High School senior, was recently named a Heald/NEXT Scholar at Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago.
The Heald/NEXT Scholarship is a five-year scholarship awarded to students accepted for admission to the engineering department at IIT and may be used for undergraduate and graduate study at IIT.
Bregman plans to attend IIT in the fall. He is the son of Marty and Nancy Bregman.
Shane Bacon, Herb Mason, Karen Reed, all of Lawrence, and Roger McDowell, Basehor, have been recognized by Baker University's School of Nursing and School of Professional and Graduate Studies for the 2001 edition of Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.
These students have been selected based on their academic achievement, service to the community, leadership in extracurricular activities and potential for continued success.
Riggs Skepnek, Free State High School senior, recently has been awarded an art scholarship from the Kansas Art Education Assn.
Her work, third in a series of self-portraits, is on display at the Capitol Building in Topeka.
She is the daughter of Bill and Susan Skepnek, Lawrence.
The scholarship competition was open to seniors majoring in art and students with instructors who held membership with the Kansas Art Education Assn.
The competition and exhibit are held in conjunction with Youth Art Month, celebrated during March each year.
