Robbery suspect ordered held

A Lawrence man charged with 18 crimes was ordered held on $475,000 bond while prosecutors prepared for two of his preliminary hearings next week.

Monte Dolan, 38, is charged with various crimes, including two counts of aggravated robbery in connection with a Feb. 1 home break-in. Dolan appeared on Thursday in Douglas County district court for a preliminary hearing on the incident, but it was continued until Wednesday, when a preliminary hearing for another of Dolan's cases will be heard.

In addition to the home invasion, Dolan is accused of burglarizing a house in North Lawrence and stealing several items. The hearing for that incident will be the same day as the hearing for the Feb. 1 incident, in which Dolan is charged with breaking into an occupied house in the 200 block of Illinois Street, armed with a handgun and a baseball bat.

KU worker injured in power plant fall

A facilities operations worker at the Kansas University power plant was injured Thursday morning in a scaffolding accident, a KU Public Safety officer said.

The worker, identified as Don Miley, a 20-year employee, was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital by Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical where he was treated for bruised ribs, Lt. Schuyler Bailey said. He was home resting by Thursday afternoon, Bailey said.

Miley was on a ramp inside the power plant where some scaffolding was being taken down. The scaffolding shifted, causing Miley to lose his balance and fall about 20 feet to a plywood roof over an office area, Bailey said. Miley was not on the scaffolding itself, Bailey said. Miley was taken down from the roof by Fire & Medical crewmen.

Surveying equipment damaged in accident

Surveying equipment was damaged when a tractor accidentally knocked over a tripod used by Douglas County workers, authorities said Thursday.

The damage occurred as surveyors were working Monday morning at the intersection of County Road 458 and East 2300 Road. Workers had moved a vehicle to allow a tractor to pass, but as the tractor went by, it accidentally knocked over a tripod, which supported equipment valued at $23,000, Douglas County sheriff's authorities said.

It wasn't known how much damage the equipment had sustained, but authorities said the incident wasn't being investigated as intentional.
