Lawrence's 14th annual St. Patrick's Day Parade, which will wind its way Saturday through downtown, will feature just about everything but green beer.
There'll be floats to admire, musicians from the Kansas City Pipe & Drum Corps to hear and face painters for children to enjoy.
The parade also will feature tunes from the John Weatherwax Junkyard Jazz Band, Lawrence's official St. Patrick's Day band.
"We'll have Miss Kansas, and we'll also have the St. Patrick's Day queen. We'll just have all kinds of things," says Debi Drummet, a 13-year parade committee member.
She expects a good turnout for the 1 p.m. parade, especially because the holiday falls on a Saturday this year. "It's a huge community event. I'd say we have 5,000 to 7,000 people attend each year."
The parade's senior king and queen are Al and Julie Hack. This year's grand marshal will be Bob Georgeson, retired president of Douglas County Bank, and Jen Brabec will be queen.
The parade will begin at South Park, head north on Massachusetts Street, cross the Kansas River, travel east on Locust Street and south on North Ninth Street to the Flamingo Club, 501 N. Ninth Street.
Other St. Patrick's Day activities throughout town include:
Red Lyon Tavern, 944 Mass., will open at 10 a.m. Bagpipers from the St. Patrick's Day Parade will visit and perform between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. The Boys of the Prairie, a Lawrence band, will play traditional Celtic music starting between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m.
Johnny's Tavern, 401 N. Second St., will host The Border Band, a Lawrence group, starting at 7:30 p.m.
KANU's Goodtime Radio Revue will feature Irish music at Liberty Hall, 642 Mass. The 8 p.m. program will feature Gabrielle's Gate, Bette Gambetta, Maria Anthony, Megan Hurt and baritone Lee Snook. Call 749-1972 for more information.
