Key West, Fla. Key West, the city that sells itself as the ultimate place to party and relax, isn't the spring break destination that it used to be, according to local police and tourism officials, who are noticing fewer sun-kissed college students in town this month.
The annual college rite continues for a few more weeks, but the word around the Southernmost City is that spring breaks of past years are history, at least for now.
Some say soaring food and lodging costs are running spring break revelers out of Key West, while others contend that strictly enforced city rules are leading them to travel to more lenient tropical locales, such as Cancun and Cozumel.
Then, some Key West business owners consider the annual migration deadly to the upscale tourist industry. Or maybe parents aren't so free with credit cards, one tourist expert speculates.
