Oakland's Saenz agrees to two-year contract

Phoenix Oakland infielder Olmedo Saenz agreed Thursday to a $1.2 million, two-year contract. Saenz, who has just over two years of major league service, will receive $350,000 this year and $800,000 in 2002. Oakland gets a $1.2 million option for 2003 with a $50,000 buyout, and the deal includes performance bonuses based on plate appearances.

Spiers going to Houston for back examination

Houston Astros third baseman Bill Spiers was to return to Houston today so team doctors could examine his sore lower back.

Spiers returned from spring training in Kissimmee, Fla., earlier this month to get a cortisone shot in his lower back. He has taken a shot in each of the past four years during spring training to control chronic back pain.

Spiers, who hit .301 with three home runs and 43 RBIs last season, had minor arthroscopic surgery on Oct. 3 because of a bone spur in his left (non-throwing) shoulder.

Indians send Fryman to Cleveland for tests

Winter Haven, Fla. Travis Fryman's right elbow may be worse than the Cleveland Indians feared.

The All-Star third baseman has been sent back to Cleveland for further medical tests on the elbow, which has been hurting Fryman since the end of last season.

Fryman, coming off his most productive year, missed his second straight exhibition game but was working out on Thursday as he awaited results of an MRI taken Wednesday.

But after examining the MRI's findings, the Indians want Fryman to have a second exam today at Cleveland's Lutheran Hospital.
