Historical accuracy

To the editor:

On Wednesday March 14, in the Lawrence Journal-World, syndicated columnist, Cal Thomas makes a historical blunder which any high school student should be able to correct. He writes, "Thus Constantine expected the Christians to serve in his military and in official capacities, when many refused, persecution broke out, reaching its culmination under Constantine's successor, Nero."

Mr. Thomas should know that Constantine ruled the Roman Empire in the fourth century A.D. (310-337), while Nero ruled in the first century A.D. (54-68).

If the columnist is attempting to instruct us in historical matters, he should know what he is writing about.

James E. Seaver,

Lawrence
