Radio revue celebrates St. Pat's Day

"Goodtime Radio Revue" will celebrate St. Patrick's Day with a Celtic music concert at 8 p.m. Saturday at Liberty Hall, 644 Mass.

The show will be broadcast live on KANU-FM 91.5 and on the Web at kanu.ukans.edu.

Performers include Gabriel's Gate, guitarist Beppe Gambetta, Megan Hurt and Maria Anthony, and baritone Lee Snook. KANU's Rachel Hunter will host the show.

Gabriel's Gate is made up of Frank Blair, vocals, bouzouki, cittern and mandolin; Brett Gibson, accordion; Keith van Winkle, mandolin, flute, whistle and vocals; and Sean Patrick Hayes, guitar and mandola.

Beppe Gambetta performs a range of music, including songs of his native Italy, American flatpicking, Celtic and classical fingerstyle.

Anthony and Hurt perform as a duo and as part of the band Uncle Dirtytoes. Their new CD is "Thegither an'a."

Snook teaches vocal performance at Washburn University in Topeka. He will perform a selection of Irish songs.

McGovern, Pizzarelli pair for concert

Overland Park "The Great American Songbook," featuring singer Maureen McGovern and jazz guitarist-singer John Pizzarelli, will be presented at 8 p.m. Friday-Saturday at Johnson County Community College, 12345 College Blvd.

Also appearing are the John Pizzarelli Trio and the 15-piece Big Band Swing Orchestra.

McGovern, best-known for her recordings of "The Morning After" (which won an Oscar for Best Song) and "We May Never Love Like This Again," has appeared on Broadway, television, radio and recordings. She received a Grammy Award nomination for her CD "The Pleasure of His Company." Her latest release is "With a Song in My Heart."

Touch of Class to appear in Ottawa

Ottawa The Nebraskan Wesleyan University's Touch of Class Swing Choir will perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Ottawa Municipal Auditorium, Third and Hickory streets.

The 18-member student ensemble is directed by Boyd Bacon, adjunct professor of music at Lincoln University. Molly Kidwell is choreographer.

Tickets are $9.50 and $8 for adults; youths under 18 are half-price. Tickets are available by calling the Ottawa Municipal Auditorium Box Office, (785) 242-8810.

Irish poet to give reading at Rockhurst

Kansas City, Mo. Irish poet Nuala Ni Dhomhnaill will read from her works at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Greenlease Gallery at Rockhurst University, 1100 Rockhurst Road.

Dhomhnaill has written three bilingual collections "Pharaoh's Daughter," "The Astrakhan Cloak" and "The Water Horse" and four collections in Irish. She has held the Burns chair of Irish studies at Boston College and now lives in Ireland.

Admission is $3 for adults at the door and $2 for senior citizens and students.

Hays Spring Market has booths available

Russell Antiques, arts and crafts and collectibles will be available at the 23rd Annual Spring Market from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 1 in the 4-H Building on East Eighth Street.

Spaces are still available. Cost is $20 for an 8-foot-by-10-foot space, or $25 with a large table.

'Frontier' exhibit looking for entries

Kansas City, Mo. Visual artists are encouraged to submit slides of original artwork for "Frontier," a multi-arts production that focuses on the history of Kansas and Missouri prior to 1900.

Artworks of all media, including sculpture, watercolor and pastel, will be evaluated. Deadline for submission is March 31.

The show will be presented in Lawrence and Kansas City, Mo.

Comic book artists to appear at convention

Kansas City, Kan. Kansas City ComiCon, a comic book and related media convention, will be Saturday and Sunday at the Jack Reardon Civic Center, Fifth and Minnesota.

Featured guests include comic book artists Michael William Kaluta, Mike Mignola and Kevin Nowlan.

Kaluta helped bring about a renaissance at DC Comics in the 1970s with his work on "The Shadow." He produced a series of complex posters and art for a number of books. In recent years he has created evocative covers for such series as "Witchcraft," "Aquaman" and "Books of Magic."

Mignola has worked in comic books for nearly 20 years, but these days concentrates on "Hellboy," with a paranormal investigator whose stories are a mixture of myth, folklore, wry humor and rousing adventure.

Nowlan is known for his covers, his inking and his dynamic portrayal of Batman. Nowland has done character design for "Batman: The Animated Series."

The convention also includes a dealers' room, where fans can find rare comics, original art, toys and related collectibles. An amateur art contest, a trivia contest, a scavenger hunt and an auction are slated on Sunday.

Hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $5 and children under 7 are free.
