— Lawrence High sophomore Megan Little placed second in the 100 butterfly with a state-qualifying time of 1:05.16 and swam a leg on the 200 freestyle relay that also qualified for state in the season opener for the city swimmers and divers on Tuesday.

Little placed second in the 100 fly and teamed with Beth Sheely, Sarah Ball and Elise Schnose to take fifth in the 200 free relay (2:07.01).

"I was hoping we'd have people make state, but I also was just hoping to survive this first meet," said first-year LHS coach Ryan Adams. "We had lots of people step up in events they probably will never swim again. It was a great first meet."

Other top-three finishers for LHS were sophomore Samie Milligan, second in the 100 backstroke (1:11.49); and the 400 freestyle relay team of Sheely, Little, Ball and Schnose that finished third in 4:11.86.

The Lions finished third at the eight-team meet with 336 points. Free State was sixth with 229 points.

The Firebirds were led by senior Bria DeSalvo, who took second in the 100 freestyle (57.93).

Free State was solid in diving with senior Jessica Virtue and junior Silvy Perkins placing 2-4.

"The divers did really well," first-year FSHS coach Jama Crady said.

Half of the Firebirds' squad returned home an hour into the meet because of a Free State concert Tuesday night.
