Junior highs raise Stanford scores
Each of the four Lawrence junior high schools raised scores on the Stanford 9 achievement test, with Central Junior High School making the biggest leap.
Ted Juneau, Central's principal, said Tuesday the school held an assembly to celebrate a 7.2-point increase from fall 1999 to fall 2000. That pushed the school's score to 59.4 points.
Statistically, he said, anything greater than a 2-point shift is considered consequential.
"We made the most significant jump at the junior high level," Juneau said.
Composite scores of other junior highs: South, 57.2 points, up 2.3; Southwest, 62.1, up 1.3; West, 62.2, up 2.5. The district average is 60.2, an increase of 3.2.
The district administers Stanford 9 to students in sixth, ninth and 12th grades.
Couple pledge $100,000 to KU engineering
A Kansas University engineering alumnus and his wife have pledged $100,000 for an expansion project for the KU School of Engineering.
Lawrence residents Frank J. and Barbara Brinkman Becker made the pledge of their support to the Kansas University Endowment Association for the construction of an addition to the KU engineering complex.
To be constructed during the next two years at a cost of $16 million, the new School of Engineering building will add almost 50,000 square feet of usable space to the existing engineering complex at 15th Street and Naismith Drive.
"Frank and Barbara Becker are two of the strongest supporters of the School of Engineering among all our alumni," said Dean Carl Locke Jr. "We greatly appreciate their contributions in both time and money."
