Help still available for natural gas bills
Spring may be around the corner, but Kansans with high winter heating bills are still feeling the effects of the coldest winter and highest natural gas prices in recent years.
Customers of Kansas Gas Service may still apply for the Winter Relief 2001 Gas Assistance Program. The program began Feb. 1 to help Kansans manage extraordinary winter heating expenses. The deadline for applications is March 30.
The first 7,500 approved applicants will receive a 50 percent reduction in the cost of gas for a six-month period retroactive to bills rendered on or after Jan. 2, and a small grant to help them meet immediate needs.
There are income guidelines to apply for the aid. For a household of four people, for example, income must be between $22,168 and $34,100.
Kansas Gas Service customers anywhere in Kansas may request an application for assistance by calling (866) 990-9910. The program is administered throughout Kansas by the American Red Cross.

93-year-old Ottawan dies after kitchen-fire accident
An Ottawa woman died from injuries she received in a fire, caused accidentally as she was cooking breakfast, authorities said Tuesday.
Alice E. Atchison, 93, died Sunday at Kansas University Medical Center after suffering second- and third-degree burns in a fire at her home, 1135 Willow.
She had been preparing breakfast on Saturday when a dish towel she had been using caught fire from a stove burner, Ottawa Assistant Fire Chief Richard Oglesby said.
As Atchison attempted to extinguish the dish towel in the kitchen sink, the fire spread to a bathrobe she was wearing. She was burned but managed to call for help, Oglesby said.
Atchison was taken to Ransom Memorial Hospital and then airlifted to the KU Med Center Burn Unit.
The fire department was notified on Monday of the fire, which didn't cause any damage to Atchison's home, Oglesby said.
