To the editor:

I was saddened, but not surprised, by the recent articles by Tim Carpenter relating to Bishop Seabury Academy. From the start, Mr. Carpenter seems to have forgotten the basic tenets of Journalism 101 to be a fair and neutral reporter, to report the facts as they are and to corroborate assertions with more than one source. When informed that certain assertions in his stories were untrue, Mr. Carpenter said that he did not have the time to pursue the matter further because "he had other stories to write."

In his most recent interview with the chair of the board of trustees, Mr. Carpenter stated that his intention was to write a positive story about Bishop Seabury - a look toward the future. That did not happen. Instead we were treated to yet another one-sided and poorly-written story. One wonders why anyone would ever volunteer their time for an interview, when their comments are largely ignored.

Some facts about Bishop Seabury's future, which Mr. Carpenter chose not to include, are as follows: 1. The faculty remain strongly united in support of the school. 2. Student recruitment is ahead of last year's schedule. 3. The search committee for a new head of school has identified several qualified candidates and site visits begin next week.

Controversy is never a pleasant experience, but in the end, the basic foundation upon which Bishop Seabury Academy was founded has remained strong. Many members of the Seabury community have stepped forward in this time to ensure that the school continues to thrive.
