Bronze statue vandalized in artist's front yard

Police had no suspects Monday in connection with vandalism that occurred when a sculpture outside the home of a Lawrence artist was tipped from its pedestal.

A bronze statue of a male figure was toppled in the yard of Elden Tefft, 1315 Naismith Drive, sometime between 10 p.m. Saturday and 6 a.m. Sunday.

Damage to the statue, which weighed upwards of 700 pounds, wouldn't be determined until it could be righted, Tefft said.

"We'll either have to get a crane or a whole lot of people," he said.

Tefft sculpted the statue about a dozen years ago. It stood on a concrete base before being tipped this weekend.

Tefft has created several statues displayed in Lawrence, including the Jayhawk perched outside Strong Hall and the kneeling figure of Moses at Smith Hall, both on the Kansas University campus.

Jayhawk faithful to rally at pregame NCAA party

The Kansas Jayhawks will be about 650 miles from home this week when they begin play in the NCAA men's basketball tournament, but that doesn't mean they'll be without a proper send-off in Dayton, Ohio.

The KU Alumni Association announced Monday that it is sponsoring a pregame reception, rally and team send-off beginning at 3:30 p.m. CST Friday at the team's hotel, the Holiday Inn at Dayton Mall, 31 Prestige Plaza Drive, Miamisburg, Ohio.

Kansas' opening-round game against Cal State Northridge is officially a sell-out, but people without tickets in Dayton can stick around after the rally to watch the contest, which will be televised on CBS. Game time is 6:40 p.m. CST.

KU freshman arrested after house burglary

A Kansas University freshman was arrested after police found him hiding inside a closet at a south Lawrence home following a burglary, police said Monday.

The 19-year-old was arrested after officers arrived at a house in the 2700 block of Grand Circle on a report of a house burglary. Inside, officers searched and found the man attempting to hide in a bedroom closet behind clothing, Sgt. Mike Pattrick said.

The burglary was reported shortly after 4 a.m. Saturday by a 21-year-old KU student at the address. She hid and locked herself in another bedroom after hearing the burglar enter, Pattrick said.

In the back yard of the residence, officers also found two stereo speakers that apparently were taken from the house.

The suspect was arrested for aggravated burglary and felony theft. He was released later Saturday on $3,500 bond.
