To the editor:

I don't understand how a major college like Kansas has to drop two sports to continue to survive fiscally. After all, just how much money are they saving dropping two lesser-known sports?

As you can see I am from Iowa and know Terry Allen well as I used to live in the Waterloo-Cedar Falls area. A local TV personality at the time said Terry would struggle as Kansas was a basketball school. Not to slight Roy or his achievements, but I lived in Lawrence for two years and it's obvious to me that basketball IS everything in Lawrence and I realize even though it's a great deal there, it seems to me you've got all your eggs in one basket.

I particularly didn't like Roy Williams' comments when it came to the Kansas cheerleading squad having the rug pulled out from underneath them at the last minute not being able to go to nationals. Roy just came off a loss to Missouri and his comment was something to the effect that he just came off a tough loss, how could you ask me a question like that when someone asked him about the situation. Maybe his supper at Applebees wasn't going well, but Roy's comment spoke volumes as to the pulse of Kansas athletics.

All basketball and nothing else makes for a dull place. Obviously I am very proud of Iow State. Football had a great season, our basketball teams are doing well as you well know, our music program is fantastic, all out of a college that's in a very small town, of maybe 25,000 people. I liked Lawrence, but maybe Bob Frederick and some bean-counters ought to wear your winter coats, come up to Ames and take notes. Dropping sports to make budgets is a knee-jerk reaction to long-term problems. Ya should of seen it coming. Wise up, spread the wealth. Find a better solution. After all, the college is for the students, not for us adults to screw up.
