To the editor:

This is in response to the letter written by Pete Rowland.

I'm a senior at the Alternative High School and this has been my first year there. The school has been known as the school for the dumb, the troublemakers or the "gang members." I'm none of those. The Alternative High School is home to kids that come from broken homes, were teased in high school for many reasons, or did poorly because of the poor teaching skills at LHS and FSHS.

Don't get me wrong, there are good teachers at those schools but none that can compare to the LAHS teachers. All the teachers at Alternative go from student to student asking if they need help. They even have a great tolerance for kids that have a back-sassing problem. All the teachers I've had this year they have sat and talked to me about my work, the way I communicate with other students, how good I've done and I'm not the only one. They do this with all the students.

I have problems getting to school because of my living situation. Now tell me this? Would all your teachers sit down and discuss who would be able to pick you up in the morning? NO, I didn't think so! These teachers work there because they believe that the loud student, the quiet student, the broken home student and the "gang member" student all deserve a good education.

These teachers don't just care about what grade we are getting, they want to know everything about us as if we are their sons or daughters. They help us achieve our goals and dreams. Our teachers are not only teachers to us, they are role models, parents, and close friends. Our school comes together to help one another to be the best student, employee, and the best person.

Our school is just like the rest of them. The only things different are the low supply of books, lack of space, the community support, and the fact that "we" the students aren't fake like most students at the other high schools.

If our school is so troubled, then why do most school violence and all shootings happen to schools of the middle and upper class.

So I'm inviting you, Mr. Pete Rowland, to join me at the "euphemistically" Alternative High School so you and the community can know the facts not the stereotypes. Not just that but why we need the taxpayers help. I'm ready!

Dell Johnston IV,

Lawrence
