Add hypocrite to the list of terms that can be used to describe Bob Knight, the livid legend who, in his bitter and pathetic dotage, has gone from obscene loose cannon to raving lunatic.
If you don't think Knight has lost touch with reality, consider his latest outburst.
He is suing Indiana University, claiming the school caused him pain and suffering, mental humiliation and emotional distress.
Can you believe it?
Indiana University caused him pain and suffering, caused him mental humiliation, caused him emotional distress?
Has any coach ever inflicted more emotional distress, more mental humiliation, more pain and suffering on his players indeed, on just about everyone around him than Robert Montgomery Knight?
Has any coach ever caused more embarrassment, or brought more humiliation, to the university which employed him?
This is a man who was filmed on video throttling one of his players. Who has head-butted players. Who once kicked his own son in the leg on the bench during a game.
This is a man who used to leave sanitary napkins in the lockers of players he felt weren't displaying the requisite toughness, a man who showed soiled toilet paper to his team to vividly convey his feelings about the way he thought they were playing.
This is a man who stuffed a referee in a garbage can; a man who, as a representative of the United States, as coach of the American team at the Pan-Am Games Puerto Rico, was removed from the court in handcuffs after assaulting a local police officer.
Knight once heaved a folding chair across the floor during a game. He threw a potted plant against a picture in one of the Indiana athletic offices, sending shattered glass flying around a matronly secretary seated at her desk.
He told television newscaster Connie Chung that, if rape appeared inevitable, she (the victim) should "relax and enjoy it." Only recently, he threatened a reporter for a national magazine, insisting the writer should immediately remove himself from a moving vehicle.
Knight is a boorish, bombastic bully who browbeats anyone who even hints at crossing him. His frequent harangues of players, of the media, of anyone who doesn't do exactly what he says, at the exact moment he insists it be done, are not merely laced with profanity, they are overflowing with it.
And now he's suing Indiana University for pain and suffering, for mental humiliation, for causing him emotional distress. Beautiful. Talk about someone who can dish it out, but can't take it.
Poor, sensitive, suffering Bobby.
How distressing it must be to be ignominiously tossed out on your ear given his choice of anatomical parts, Knight undoubtedly would have chosen some more graphic example of his having bottomed out by the university for which you racked up so many victories.
How degrading to be dumped. How humiliating to be treated, not like a Hall-of-Famer, but like a pariah.
Yes, Bobby, we feel your pain.
Yeah, right.
Big, bad Bob Knight, the ultimate tough guy, is revealed as a sniveling whiner.
Waaaaah! They picked on me! Waaaaah! They weren't nice to me! Waaaaah! They hurt my feelings!
