Several retirement communities offer assisted-living or more intensive care for seniors. Among them:

Brandon Woods Retirement Community, 1501 Inverness Drive, 838-8000.

Assisted-living: 20 one-person suites, 11 one- and two-bedroom apartments.

Skilled-nursing: 160 beds, including 40 for Alzheimer's and other dementia; includes Medicare rehab area for short-term stays.

Rates: "We are comparable to everybody else," said Jan Maddox, a director.




Lawrence Presbyterian Manor, 1429 Kasold Drive, 841-4262.



Assisted-living: Apartments and suites ranging from $1,500 to $3,000 a month, depending on size and level of service.

Skilled-nursing: 60 beds, from $91 to $115 a day.




Alterra Sterling House of Lawrence, 3220 Peterson Road, 832-9900.



Assisted-living: 38 apartments, with base rates of $2,200 to $2,900 a month, depending on size.




Pioneer Ridge Retirement Community, southeast of Wakarusa Drive and Harvard Road. Opens in April.



Assisted-living: 60 units, with monthly rates ranging from $2,800 for singles and $3,800 for couples.

Skilled-nursing: 60 beds, with average rate of $110 a day.
