Workshop offered for novice writers

Mission "Find the Writer Within You," an eight-session workshop for new writers who want to explore fiction, nonfiction and poetry, will begin Thursday.

The sessions will be from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Thursdays and run through May 3 at 6000 Lamar. Cost is $50.

The classes, sponsored by the Kansas City Writers Group, will develop creativity, writing techniques and marketing skills.

Pet portraits picked for dog show

Wichita Kristin Dempsey, a Lawrence pet portraitist, illustrator and fine artist, had two paintings accepted into the 15th Annual Art Show at the Dog Show, with one of those paintings winning four awards.

"Gertie's World" won the Pedigree Food for Dogs Award of Merit, best entry by a Kansas artist, best entry depicting a dog from the sporting group and first place in oil/acrylic paintings.

The works will be displayed through March 24 at the City Arts Building, 225 W. Lewis. Gallery hours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays-Fridays and 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturdays.

Shimomura exhibit on display in Idaho

"An American Diary," an exhibit of paintings by Roger Shimomura, is showing through May 6 at the Boise Art Museum in Boise, Idaho.

The exhibition is based on diaries kept by Toku Shimomura, the artist's grandmother, while she was interned in Camp Minidoka, Idaho, during World War II.

Shimomura, a art professor at Kansas University, will give a talk April 19 at the museum.

Bridge players to compete in KC

Kansas City, Mo. More than 5,000 world-class bridge players from the United States and at least eight other countries will converge Thursday to take part in the Spring North American Bridge Championships.

The 11-day tournament, sanctioned by the American Contract Bridge League, will be held in Hyatt Regency Crown Center and Westin Crown Center in downtown Kansas City, Mo.

The tournament will draw participants from the United States, England, Israel, Iceland, Italy, the Netherlands and Norway. An estimated 10,000 tables are expected to be in play.
