HAINES CITY, FLA. Right-hander Mac Suzuki, who had a break through season last year, and four other Kansas City Royals signed one-year contracts Thursday.
Suzuki was 8-10 with a 4.34 ERA in 32 games, 29 of them starts, last season.
Suzuki set his career highs with victories, 1882/3 innings pitched and 135 strikeouts in 2000.
The Royals also signed catcher Hector Ortiz, infielder Luis Ordaz, pitcher Dan Murray and outfielder Dee Brown.
Ortiz hit .386 in 26 games last season. He was claimed off the waiver wire last April from the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Murray was 0-0 with a 4.66 ERA in 10 relief appearances last season. Brown, a 1996 first-round draft pick, has been called up in September the past three seasons and had a .113 batting average in 32 big league games.
The Royals still have 12 players unsigned on their roster.
