Cause of smoke unknown at KU residence hall
The cause of smoke seen spilling from a Kansas University residence hall Thursday morning remains a mystery, LawrenceDouglas County Fire & Medical reported.
Fire crews were dispatched about 1:30 a.m. Thursday to Ellsworth Hall, 1734 Engel Road, where smoke was seen in the ninth floor and surrounding floor windows.
Firefighters evacuated all residents but Battalion Chief Bill Stark said the source of the smoke had not been determined. Firefighters searched the floors, trash chutes, rooms and more but found no fire and no cause of smoke. A thermal imager, which detects heat, also found nothing.
There was no loss as a result of the smoke, Stark said.
Activities announced to celebrate Red Cross Month
March is National Red Cross Month and the Douglas County chapter is offering two activities to celebrate.
CPR Saturday will begin at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at Robinson Gym on the Kansas University campus. Health & Safety Volunteer Annette McDonald will teach the free class, which will include CPR certification.
Two blood drives also have been scheduled for March. The first will be from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 2211 Inverness Drive. It is sponsored by Southwest Junior High and McDonald's. The second will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 26 at the United Way Building, 2518 Ridge Court.

Auction proceeds to pay medical expenses
Bonner Springs Family and friends of Don and Teresa Kirkpatrick have organized an auction for this weekend to raise money to help with Don's medical expenses after a 1999 car accident.
A silent auction will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at George Meyn Community Center in Wyandotte County Park, 126th and State Avenue, Bonner Springs. Doors open at 10 a.m., and an auction will begin at 1 p.m. Items for bid include compact discs, jewelry, tools, Beanie Babies and gift certificates.
Sausage and Pancake Supper to benefit Vinland Fair
Vinland The Whole-Hog Sausage and Pancake Supper to benefit the 2001 Vinland Fair will take place from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Exhibit Building at the fairgrounds.
The supper is a continuation of the Vinland Grange Whole-Hog Sausage and Pancake Supper, which was started more than 50 years ago in the Vinland Grange Hall as a benefit for the fair. The modern supper has been conducted for 15 years by the fair board.
The fair will take place Aug. 9 through Aug. 11 at the fairgrounds.
KU education summit topics are women and leadership
The Kansas University School of Education Educational Opportunity Center (EOC) will play host to a Spring Leadership Summit next week.
"Women & Leadership" will be from 8:15 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Thursday on the KU campus.
The summit is designed to help participants increase their self-awareness, knowledge of occupational options and goal achievement abilities. It is free to all current and potential EOC participants and guests.
The EOC is a career counseling and educational federal assistance program The program provides free counseling and assistance to individuals seeking to improve their job opportunities through education.
