Royals edge Braves, tumble to Marlins

— Raul Ibanez hit a ninth-inning grand slam off Damion Moss on Wednesday, giving a Kansas City Royals' split squad a 5-4 win over the Atlanta Braves.

Craig Wilson and Byron Gettis led off the ninth with singles and Dee Brown walked on four pitches. Ibanez then hit a fastball over the right-field fence.

Keith Lockhart, traded from Kansas City to the Braves for Jermaine Dye, hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning off rookie Scott Mullen.

B.J. Surhoff, who went 3-for-3 with two doubles, had a wind-aided double to shallow right-center in the second and scored on Dave Martinez' single.

John Burkett, Odalis Perez and Jason Marquis shut out the Royals on two singles through the first seven innings.

Jon Nunnally doubled in the eighth inning off Moss and scored on Carlos Beltran's two-out single.

Jose Santiago, the fifth Royals pitcher, won by allowing one run in 12/3 innings. Starter Brian Meadows gave up one run and three hits in four innings.

Marlins 6, Royals 1

Melbourne, Fla. Andy Fox homered, drove in three runs and scored three times to help a Florida split squad beat Kansas City. Starter Vladimir Nunez allowed four hits and one unearned run in three innings and winner Ricky Bones pitched two scoreless innings.

Fox hit a two-run homer to put Florida ahead 4-1 in the fifth. He walked in the first and scored on Abraham Nunez's double, then hit an RBI fielder's choice in the seventh and scored on Lyle Mouton's double. Cliff Floyd homered leading off the fourth for Florida.

Rey Sanchez, Carlos Febles and Aaron Guiel each had two hits for Kansas City. Loser Jason Rakers allowed three runs and three hits in two innings.
