To the editor:
Rep. Dennis Moore is apparently flooded with messages from the corporate world asking him to vote for Bush's tax reduction package. I'm not surprised, considering a large portion of such reductions would benefit the rich. (I guess the poor are not so well organized.)
It would be much more fair for everyone if the system described in a David Broder column, published Feb. 13, were adopted: declare an annual "dividend" of $300 for every man, woman, child in years of actual budget surplus. Is this not the system Alaska annually uses to share oil royalties to its inhabitants?
I wish President Bush would not continue to declare that the surplus is of "the people's" money. He needs to be reminded that the mammoth federal debt is likewise "the people's" debt, and we all have a responsibility to see that it's paid off as soon as possible.
Bunker Clark,
Lawrence
