Grbac signs with Ravens

Baltimore The Baltimore Ravens and free-agent quarterback Elvis Grbac agreed to a five-year, $30 million contract Tuesday.

The deal includes an $11 million signing bonus, Grbac's agent, Jim Steiner, said from St. Louis.

Grbac, 31, will come to Baltimore today to sign the contract, take a physical and meet the media, Ravens spokesman Bob Eller said.

Steiner said the Ravens' Super Bowl championship last season was the determining factor for his client.

"Winning is the only thing on his agenda, playing in a Super Bowl and winning a Super Bowl," Steiner said.

The Ravens were the only team negotiating with the former Kansas City quarterback after Cincinnati dropped out of the bidding Monday.

Grbac, who threw for 28 touchdowns and 4,169 yards with the Chiefs last season, was one of two highly sought free-agent quarterbacks, along with Brad Johnson.

Johnson signed a five-year, $28 million deal with Tampa Bay Monday.

Flutie visits with Chargers

San Diego Doug Flutie and the San Diego Chargers sized each other up on Tuesday and liked what they saw. Chargers coach Mike Riley envisions Flutie bridging the gap to when Michael Vick, the likely first pick in the draft, is ready to play. And Flutie, who was cut by the Buffalo Bills last week, would be reunited with the general manager who brought him back to the NFL three years ago.

BASEBALL

Mazeroski named to Hall

Tampa, Fla. Bill Mazeroski, the slick-fielding second baseman best remembered for hitting one of baseball's most famous home runs, has a new moniker: Hall of Famer.

The former Pittsburgh Pirates star was elected for induction Tuesday by the Veterans Committee, which also picked Negro leagues player Hilton Smith while bypassing Dick Williams, Gil Hodges, Dom DiMaggio and Marvin Miller for at least another year.

Mazeroski, who retired in 1972 after 17 major league seasons, came within one vote of being selected by the panel last winter. He was in the Pirates spring training clubhouse in Bradenton when he learned the news and made the 45-minute drive to Tampa for the announcement.

"I really don't know what to say. I never ever expected to be here," he said before slipping on a Hall of Fame jersey and cap.

"You dream of a lot of things. You want to be in the big leagues. You want to make the All-Star game. You want to be in a World Series. You want to do all those things. But you never dream of this. It's pretty exciting. I just hope I can live up to it."
