14-year-old hospitalized after fall from horse

A 14-year-old girl was taken by air ambulance to a Topeka hospital Saturday after she fell from a horse, an official with Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical said.

The girl was identified as Latisha Thomas, but a hometown was not listed on Fire & Medical records, Battalion Chief Phil Kuhnert said.

Fire & Medical was called about 1:30 p.m. to respond to the 1700 block of East 50 Road in Northwest Douglas County, Kuhnert said. Life Star helicopter was called and transported the girl to St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center, Topeka. Hospital officials would not release any information concerning the girl's condition.

Building catches fire while being repaired

Flames from cutting torches being used to repair a building damaged last year by a fire caused another fire Saturday, an official with Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical said.

Firefighters responded at 9:46 a.m. to GCO Carpets and Color Tile, 3000 Iowa, Battalion Chief Jerry Karr said. The torches ignited the debris from carpet burned in last year's fire, he said.

The fire was quickly extinguished and there was no further damage to the business, Karr said.
