Coming events

Farmers have until March 15 to purchase federally subsidized crop insurance.

With several new programs available at a lower cost to farmers, knowing the difference between this year's crop-insurance offerings will pay, said Art Barnaby, Kansas State University agricultural economist.

"Growers have new choices in the insurance market, combined with substantial increases in subsidies," Barnaby said. "Crop insurance will be very cheap, compared to the premiums paid last year for similar coverage. With the additional subsidies and reduced premium costs, many corn and soybean growers are likely to increase their coverage levels."

Growers should ask their insurance agents plenty of questions as they decide which program is right for them, Barnaby said.

For more detailed information and a side-by-side comparison of the new programs, interested persons can visit www.agecon.ksu.edu/risk/ on the World Wide Web.

The Kansas Department of Commerce & Housing is sponsoring a "New City" application workshop for community leaders interested in applying for the Kansas Main Street program, which encourages the development and revitalization of downtown commercial districts.

The workshop will be from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. March 15 in the Security Benefit Building at 700 S.W. Harrison St. in Topeka.

The workshop will give participants background information regarding the Kansas Main Street approach to downtown revitalization

Applications are due June 1 with new designated Kansas Main Street cities to be announced in early July.

The workshop is free, but registration is required. For more information or to register, contact the department's Community Development Division by calling (785) 296-3485, faxing (785) 296-0186 or e-mailing comdev@kdoch .state.ks.us.
