The Prairie Wind Dancers will present its annual "New Works Concert" at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Lawrence Arts Center, 200 W. Ninth St.
Dancer Kimber Andrews has created two works: "Divergence," an exploration of traveling pathways that wind through space and meld into unison movement, and "Groundswell," inspired by the wave-like patterns of an ocean and performed by the Prairie Wind Dancers Apprentice Company.
Artistic director Candi Baker continues her exploration of prairie themes in "Fair Day Cloud," during which dancer Jennifer Wilson performs a work inspired by costume sketches by John Steuart Curry.
Deborah Bettinger, artistic director of Lawrence Ballet Ensemble, has choreographed two works: "Haunting," in which Chinese stylized movement is paired with dance to create a theatrical piece that explores the toll addiction takes on relationships, and "Poetry," a duet that puts the written word into motion.
"In Your Fold," created by Naomi Carson, uses sleek movements and distorted shapes to create a funny yet tension-filled dance.
Damian Houston has choreographed an untitled work that begins with the dancers using rocking gestures that turn into sharp gestural movements and eventually take on a fluid quality.
Lori Madl's piece, "Hylas and the Nymphs of the Spring," plays on the idea of a mythical meeting. The lyric dance uses classical lines and humor.
Mary Shahrokhi's solo, "With or Without You," is performed in silence. The solo is characterized by innovative movement, quick directional changes and sustained long lines of the body.
"Why did the chicken?" choreographed by Wilson, was inspired by Eastern culture. The piece, performed in silence, begins with a solo by Wilson, then dancers fill the space with angular lines contrasted by fluid arm gestures.
Tickets, which are available at the door, are $6 for adults and $4 for students and senior citizens.
