Oboe Days begins Thursday at KU
Nancy Ambrose King will be the featured performer during Oboe Days, a series of workshops and performances Thursday through Saturday in Swarthout Recital Hall in Murphy Hall.
At 2:30 p.m. Thursday, King will share her recording and performance experiences and her thoughts about women in music. Kansas University faculty oboist Margaret Marco and the Planel Trio, a bassoon-oboe-piano ensemble, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
A high school jam session will be from noon to 1:30 p.m. Saturday and King will teach a master class from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. King will perform a recital at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
King took first prize in the New York International Competition for Oboe Soloists in 1995. She has performed on National Public Radio, with the New York String Orchestra and has recorded two solo CDs.
King has a doctorate degree in musical arts and a performer's certificate from the Eastman School of Music. She is associate professor of oboe at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign.
All events are free and open to the public.
Russian ballet to appear at Baker
Baldwin The St. Petersburg Ballet Theatre will perform at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Rice Auditorium at Baker University.
The Russian ballet troupe will perform the third act of Tchaikovsky's "Sleeping Beauty." The classical ballet made its premiere in January 1890 in St. Petersburg. The troupe is led by artistic director Askold Makarov.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for youths.
Lawrence artist shows work in Leavenworth
Leavenworth "On Location: a wildflower exhibition," a collection of works by Lawrence artist Celia Smith, is being displayed at the Mutual Savings Assn.
Smith did the paintings of wildflowers on location in Idaho and Glacier National Park. She used acrylic paint and Japanese ink and brush on paper in creating the images.
