Army Reserve Pvt. James Fletcher and Army National Guard Pfc. Morgan Slusher have graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.
During training, the soldiers received instruction and practice in drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, and Army history and traditions.
James is the son of Mary and Stephen Fletcher, Lawrence, and a 2000 graduate of Lawrence High School.
Morgan is the daughter of Elaine Gunter, McLouth, and Michael Slusner, Topeka.
Army Reserve Maj. Cheryl Hickert has completed an overseas annual training assignment at the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Landstuhl, Germany, the largest U.S. Army hospital in Europe.
During training, the reservist served in a key position due to critical shortages of medical specialists in certain career fields throughout the Army active-duty ranks. Hickert's work and dedication to duty clearly distinguishes and identifies the Army Reserve member as a key asset to the U.S. Military Medical Corps.
She received a bachelor's degree in 1979 from Kansas University and a master's degree from Wichita State University.
Hickert's husband, B.J., resides in Lawrence.
Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Steven Russell has deployed aboard the USS George Philip FFG-12, homeport at San Diego.
Russell will support a Joint Interagency Task Force involving United States ground and air operations off the western coast of South America.
The task force will support a four-month interdiction program that will conduct routine inspections of coastline and maritime operations for drug trafficking.
Russell is the son of Ila and Vern Russell, Lawrence.
