St. Louis Daniel Novak had a game-high 16 points to lead Southwest Missouri State to a 57-45 win over Wichita State in the first round of the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament Friday night.
It was the first time in 11 Missouri Valley Conference Tournament appearances that Southwest Missouri State (13-15) was forced to play in a first-round game.
The No. 8 seed was also a new low for the Bears
The Bears have reached the semifinals in eight of the last 10 years. To add to that record, the Bears will have to beat the top seed, Creighton, in a quarterfinal game Saturday afternoon.
Wichita State, the No. 9 seed, finished its season with a 9-19 record. The Shockers were led by Troy Mack, who finished with 15 points.
